Fire rating: There are a few schools of thought when it comes to fire rating. One is, the more the merrier, however the longer the fire rating the bigger the price. So, this is how I come up with how long of a fire rating is needed. Warning!! I’m about to kick a dead horse. Find out what your response time to fire is, and double that time frame.

Relockers: Relockers a pretty good sign that you’re dealing with a “real” safe. Relockers trip when a safe is drilled, making opening the safe much more time consuming.

And last but not least if the safe doesn’t bolt to the floor the bad guy will just pick it up and thank you later for putting all the good stuff in a convenient carry off.

If the safe that you are buying is not used for business get a manual dial, and what ever you do NEVER BUY A SENTRY SAFE!!!!!!

Although most people don’t give a second thought to the security options available in door hinges, there are door hinges available that can provide better security.

In some parts of the country, it is common to see doors swing out. When the door swings outward, the hinge pins are typically exposed on the outside of the house.

This could allow an intruder to tap the hinge pins up and out, and lift the door off its hinges, removing the door without unlocking it.

There are several door hinge designs available that make it more difficult to remove the hinge pins.

Non-Removable Pins

On these hinges, the pins are held in place by a setscrew. If the door is in the open position, the setscrew is exposed and can be retracted, and the hinge pins removed. If the door is closed, the setscrew cannot be accessed.

Safety Studs

These hinges come in full mortised type only, meaning the hinge sits in routed-out insets in the door and frame. Studs extend from one hinge leaf and a hole is punched in the corresponding position on the opposite leaf. When the door is closed, the stud sits in the hole. If the hinge pin is removed, the door still cannot be taken off its hinges because the stud holds it in place.

Fast-Riveted (Crimped) Pins

These hinges are designed so the hinge pin cannot be removed. The hinge pin is made longer than the hinge height, inserted into the hinge, and spun on the end to create a rivet-type end on the top and bottom of the pin.

Using hinges that keep an intruder from taking the door off can be a benefit even if the hinge pins are on the inside face of the door.

Combined with a deadbolt lock with a captured key feature, these features can help deter an intruder, who has broken in through a window, from unlocking the door or taking the door off its hinges.

It is important to use these security products on all exterior doors, including any from the garage to the outside, and on any doors from an attached garage to the house.

Security products can also be retrofitted onto existing hinges in older homes.

 Look at your keys right now if you see a five or six digit number on either side thats your key code if someone writes this number down they can go to any locksmith shop in America and have a key made for your home or business by that code for $5.00 . As in bye bye new computer system the next time you have to go out of town, and the worst part about it is a lot of  home and business policies will not pay out if there is no sign of forced entry, and if they have a key there wont be.

If you have just found a 5 or 6 digit code on one of your keys I would recomend you take it to a locksmith shop and have it duplicated on a “Do Not Duplicate” blank!!

Restricted keyways definitely help in avoiding wrongful duplication. Restricted keys are keys that require a signature for duplication, and are not available at hardware stores so there is no chance of someone just not seeing the “do not duplicate” warning and duplicating the key by accident.

There is kind of a flip side to restricted keys, and that is that if the key is on a “restricted do not duplicate” blank and not just a “do not duplicate” key blank it will also restrict the consumer from going to another locksmith. This can be very dangerous sometimes because restricted “do not duplicate blanks are often proprietary, as in the locksmith will pay for their own key-way and no other locksmith will be able to get the key-way at any price.Proprietary restricted “do not duplicate” keys will almost always require restricted locks as well, and these locks are generally 4 to 5 times as expensive.  In order for a consumer to go to a new locksmith they will nine times out of ten just have to replace all their hardware which could cost thousands. The only other way would be  to contact the manufacturer and try to get reassigned to a new locksmith company and that is practically impossible because a lot of the locksmiths that buy these key-ways only do so to handcuff the consumer and keep them from shopping around, heck that’s how they sell the keyways to locksmiths.

So recommend a Non proprietary “do not duplicate” blanks, unless your securing a bank, money room, prison, or a government building.
